Getting Started
What is Clue Town?▼
Puzzles. Padlocks. Trivia. Hidden clues. Clue Town is an interactive adventure in Stratford-upon-Avon (think outdoor escape room). Explore the town with Shakespeare as your guide, discovering secrets many walk straight past. Play solo or in a team of up to 8, or battle friends and family head-to-head. Go at your own pace, unlock perks at local businesses, and compete on leaderboards. Perfect for tourists and locals alike.
Do I need to download an app?▼
No download required! Clue Town runs entirely from your mobile's web browser. Just click "Start Hunt", create your team, and you're ready to go. Works on any device — you just need an internet (data) connection.
How many people can play per team?▼
Teams can have 1-8 players. You can all play on one device, or share your game link with your team to play on multiple phones working together in real-time. Perfect for individuals, groups, friends, families, and couples!
Can I play alone or do I need a team?▼
You can absolutely play solo! Just create a team name for yourself. Solo players still earn certificates, compete on leaderboards, and unlock all the same perks and features.
What ages are the hunts suitable for?▼
All of our hunts are designed to be suitable for everyone — it's pure family fun. There is no sensitive content to worry about.
Are the routes accessible for wheelchairs or limited mobility?▼
Most of our routes are largely accessible. We operate a mobility-friendly approach — if a question or location
is inaccessible, we'll put a mobility notice on it so you can skip it. Skipped questions at indoor locations
won't affect your score.
Can I replay a hunt I've already completed?▼
Not after submitting — unless you check out again. However, if you haven't submitted yet, you're welcome to return and complete it over several days (there's no official time limit).
Can I add new players to my hunt after I've checked out?▼
Yes! Share your team's link with the newcomer — when they open it, they can add themselves as a new player under 'Who is playing on this device?'
How can I access my game again after closing my browser?▼
We send you a magic link via email once you check out, so you can always regain access later. Your game is also accessible from the homepage (as a banner) if you're using the same device and browser.
During Your Hunt
How long does a hunt take to complete?▼
Most hunts take around 90-120 minutes to complete, but there's no official time limit! You can take unlimited breaks — even over several days — so you can truly explore at your own pace. The game only tracks your active hunt time.
Can I pause or take breaks during the hunt?▼
Absolutely! There is a break button to pause your game anytime. You have unlimited break time. Perfect for grabbing food, resting, or exploring the area. Your progress is always saved automatically. If the weather turns bad you can even return on another day!
What if it rains?▼
We hope it doesn't, but the UK is notorious for it. You're welcome to take a break (since you get unlimited breaks) until the weather clears up — even if that means returning on another day. There's also a mini weather forecast built into the hunt: we'll try to give you a heads-up if we think it's going to rain.
What types of questions and puzzles can I expect?▼
We like variety here at Clue Town — no two hunts will feature exactly the same question types. We have everything from regular questions to word searches, jigsaws, crosswords, padlocks, colour locks, directional locks (and the list goes on).
Are there hints available?▼
Yes! Most questions have free helpful hints to give you a nudge in the right direction, there is no penalty for peeking at hints. In addition, each team starts with 5 powerful clues (we call that 'Ask Shakespeare') that nearly solve questions. However, asking Shakespeare adds time penalties to your ranking (5-10 minutes each). You can also flag questions to review them later.
How do I know if my answers are correct?▼
Some questions show 'Solved' immediately when you get them right. Others are checked at the end when you submit your hunt — you'll see your full results with correct answers revealed. This mix keeps things interesting. Don't worry about exact spelling — we accept close answers. Even if you don't get a question fully correct you may score partial points.
How does scoring work?▼
You earn points for each correct answer. Your final ranking is based on your score percentage and completion time — faster teams rank higher when scores are tied. Using powerful clues adds time penalties (5-10 minutes each). Memory makers and gems award bonus points. Skipped questions (at inaccessible locations) don't count against you.
What if a hunt location is closed or inaccessible?▼
Most hunt locations are outdoors and publicly accessible year-round. However, some locations may have varying levels of access (e.g. an indoor location with full or partial closures). Any unanswered questions in these locations won't count against your score. You'll see a "Skip this location" button which gives you the option relative to your access. If a location isn't accessible when you arrive but opens later, you can return to it any time before submitting your hunt.
Can my team play on multiple devices?▼
Yes! Share your unique game link with teammates and everyone sees updates instantly. Submit an answer on one phone and it appears on all devices in real-time.
What happens if I lose signal, get disconnected, or run out of battery?▼
Don't worry — your progress is automatically saved on our database no matter what happens. If you lose signal or get disconnected, your game will reconnect when you can access the internet again. We suggest sharing your link with at least one teammate (if possible) so you can continue if your battery runs out. Your game data is always safe.
What are memory makers?▼
They're optional fun tasks to do on your hunt. They run on an honour system — if you mark them complete, you'll receive bonus points. If you upload media (photos/videos), they'll be available to review in your results. Uploaded media is securely kept for 5 days, then automatically deleted to protect your privacy.
How do local perks work?▼
While playing, you may be lucky enough to unlock discounts at local, independent establishments which you can then redeem. We're trying to do our bit to keep the high street alive here at Clue Town.
Battle Mode
What is a battle?▼
A battle is for private events. It builds on our classic mode by letting you compete directly, head-to-head with other teams! See live rankings as you overtake each other, share memories in a joint gallery, and compete for the highest score among you. Perfect for larger groups wanting to add extra competitive fun to their adventure (beyond our usual leaderboards).
If I host a battle, how do I manage it?▼
As a host, we give you the tools you need to manage your event. Before you check out, you can decide whether to prepay for multiple teams upfront or let them pay for themselves later. After checkout, you'll be issued a battle code to share with all the teams you want to join. You'll get access to features like the ability to put everyone on a break, and end the battle with a 5-minute warning whenever you wish to call it a day.
How do prepaid teams join the battle?▼
After sharing your battle code, prepaid slots become available to joining teams. Before checkout, they'll see any available prepaid slots they can claim — first-come, first-served. No payment required from them.
Payments
What's your refund policy?▼
We offer a 100% refund if you haven't started your hunt yet. Once you've hit 'Start Hunt', refunds are reviewed case-by-case. Gift vouchers are non-refundable once purchased. Contact us if you encounter technical issues or have concerns.
Do you store my payment info?▼
No. We use Stripe, a secure and encrypted payment processor. We do not store any payment information ourselves.
How do gift vouchers work?▼
Gift vouchers are valid for one year for the hunt you choose. If the price changes, your voucher will still be honoured. Vouchers cannot be exchanged for different routes at this time. Gift vouchers can be redeemed on the team setup page after clicking start hunt.
Do you offer promo codes or discounts?▼
Yes! If you have a promo code, you can enter it at checkout on the Stripe payment page.
